What’s the deal with Acai?

Every day it seems that there is a new  “super food” making its way into headlines and morning talk shows. The Acai berry isn’t new but it is still raising questions and many people have fallen victim to supplement scams.

The Acai Berry comes from the palm trees of the rain forests in South America. It is known for its antioxidants, fiber and heart healthy fats. There are many claims that this berry helps with a variety of health issues. The problem is that once the fruit is harvested, it quickly loses its nutritional benefits so by the time it reaches the US, the benefits have greatly decreased. 

You may have heard of Mona Vie – a bottled mixture of many different juices that is high in antioxidents and claims to heal anything from knee pain to acid reflux. While I am not going to get into my thoughts on Mona Vie, I will mention that they developed a freeze drying method in order to preserve the nutrients in the Acai berry fruit.

The reason I am writing about the Acai Berry is because someone asked me if I would shed some light on this super food. I cannot tell you that if you consume this fruit, it will benefit you anymore than consuming other berries like blueberries and strawberries. I do promote getting your nutrients from food rather than supplements so what I recommend is eating a variety of fruits and vegetables like kale, broccoli, blueberries, strawberries, apples, etc. Pomegranate juice may be a better alternative but remember that all juice has sugar and calories. I suggest cutting your juice with water.

One warning- there are a lot of Acai Berry scams out there. One in particular is Acai Berry Colon Cleanse. They offer a free trial where you just pay the 4.99 shipping fee. If you don’t cancel within 14 days, you will be charged almost $200 and sent more products with another charge of $79. It is very difficult to get your money back at that point. There is no need to get your antioxidents from a pill.  Avoid these weight loss scammers.
