Kicking and Screaming

If only there was a way to escape their evil clutches. You are defenseless as they drag you kicking and screaming inside their brightly colored hell. The deafening sounds of children laughing and the smell of fried grease plays like a hypnotic drum on your senses. If only it weren’t forced upon you. If only you had the choice to resist.

So maybe you’ve heard that McDonald’s has given in to the pressure from health advocates and parents and is changing its Happy Meal a bit to make it more “nutritional.” In their commitment to offer “improved nutrition choices,” McDonald’s will offer a low-fat dairy item and apple slices in all of their Happy Meals and reduce the number of fries that come with the meal. This lowers the calorie content by 20%. They also plan to use less grease and salt in their overall food prep and reduce sodium by 15% by 2015.

While I applaud their efforts and appreciate what they are doing to positively impact the obesity epidemic here in America, I cannot help but shake my head. I am not shaking my head at McDonald’s. Let them continue to exist in all of their grease-tastic glory. It is the parents and health advocates I am disappointed in.

Come on. Take a little responsibility. Just because McDonald’s exists doesn’t mean you have to participate in any way with their fatty shenanigans. If you want to indulge in a burger and fries, that is your right. Do not go and blame them for your bulging waistline. Fast food should be just that: and indulgence. An every once in a while at most sort of thing. The choice is yours. If you choose to take your child to McDonald’s on a regular basis and blame McDonald’s for your child’s weight issues, you need to listen up. McDonald’s did not drag you kicking and screaming into their home and force you to feed your child a Happy Meal at gun point.

Good for McDonald’s for trying to healthy up their menu. But it is still fast food. It should not be a regular part of your child’s nutrition. And YOU have the power to resist.

Be Well.
